Submission Guidelines

Please follow the guidelines listed on this page for both written and art/ photography submissions.

  • Submission deadline for Spring 2024 issue: MAR 20
  • Please review the guidelines carefully as some information should be formatted differently than previous years.

Submission Guidelines:
We can only accept previously unpublished works.
This magazine is for homeschooled middle school and high school students only. All works should be the original creation of a homeschooled student, ages 10 through 18.

Types of works accepted:
  • Poetry
  • Short Stories
  • Novel Excerpts
  • Short Plays (one-acts)
  • Non-fiction Essays
  • Artwork
  • Photography
  • Comics (as graphics)
All written work is limited to 1500 words. Novel excerpts should be limited to one chapter, and plays should be no longer than one act.

Art and Photography should not include people or identifying information (Fictional characters will be allowed).

ALL content should be appropriate for the age range of the magazine, which is ages 10 through 18 years.
 
The usage of generative artificial intelligence in any capacity is not permitted.

Submissions should be sent by email, with one creative work per email. 
(Select artwork may be submitted by SHINE students in person so long as they have the artist's identifying info with it)
Please make the subject of the email either "WRITTEN SUBMISSION" or "ART/PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMISSION."

For all WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS, include at the top of the document:

  • Submitter's Name
  • Title of work
  • Genre (poetry, short story, play, etc)
  • Homeschool Group (if applicable)
  • Grade / age
  • Location (City, State) 
  • Permission Statement (please cut and paste the statement at the bottom of this page, and complete your name in the appropriate field.)
For all ART/PHOTOGRAPHY submissions, include in the body of the email:
  • Submitter's Name
  • Title of work
  • Genre (poetry, short story, play, etc)
  • Homeschool Group (if applicable)
  • Grade / age
  • Location (City, State) 
  • Permission Statement (please cut and paste the statement at the bottom of this page, and complete your name in the appropriate field.)

Submit written work as an attachment in Word format (.docx or .doc) or as a PDF.
Submit art, photography, and comics as an attachment in .jpg or .png format only.

Submission Limitations:
We accept multiple submissions by the same author/artist. Please respect the following limitations:
  • Written (non-poetry): 3 entries per issue
  • Poetry: 5 entries per issue
  • Art, Photography, or Comics: 5 entries per issue. 
    (each comic page/image deducts from the total art, photography, and comic entries allowed)

Permission Statement
Please include this statement with your name in the blank in your submission email.

"I, _______________, give The Luminous Literary Magazine permission to publish my submitted works in any online or printed copies of the magazine. I also certify that the works submitted are my own original creations and have not been previously published. I acknowledge this magazine is for homeschooled students ages 10 through 18, and I meet these restrictions."
